Better, Bath Sport and Leisure Centre's Ollie Grimes give us his top tips for creating healthy fitness habits

The first three weeks is always the hardest, this is where the habit of coming to the gym will be formed. As a Gym Manager, the most common reason I see people not continue is their results not appearing as rapidly as one would hope. Don’t panic! I’m going to give you some reasons to continue after that three week mark, regardless of what you see on the mirror or the scales. 

First, regular exercise will not only increase your life expectancy but it will also drastically lift your mood. Exercising releases serotonin, also known as ‘the feel good factor’ this is what raises your mood when exercising – perfect for the current gloomy state that many of us find ourselves in  at this time of year after the height of Christmas.

Second, it will help with day to day life. Hear me out, you may be thinking ‘how is walking on a treadmill going to help day to day’? Apart from the obvious health benefits, you will also receive functional benefits from working out. Regular exercise translates to day to day life. Pushing exercises for example, can help us push ourselves back up after a fall. 

Thirdly, it’s a way to let off some steam. The atmosphere that we have created is that of a stress free zone, waiting for you to come and enjoy. Additionally to the atmosphere that we have created, we have also worked tirelessly over lockdowns one and two to create a safe space for everyone. All of our gym facilities across Bath and North East Somerset are government approved COVID secure which means you are safe in our capable hands. 

My fourth point is that you will see results! Ultimately, if your goal is to loose weight nutrition plays a part as you need to be in a calorie deficit in order to start shredding that weight off. Having a healthy diet goes hand in hand with regular exercise meaning you will start to see results much more quickly. 

Lastly, and perhaps the most important factor of regular exercise, it will boost your immune system. This, now more than ever, is one of the best things we can do to help our bodies combat the virus. Studies show that just one workout can have beneficial effects on your immunity, and regular sessions add up quickly to boost the immune system.
