Personal Attention in Education

The heart of the independent school method has always been personal attention, and certainly an integral part of the educational vision of Bath Academy is that ‘knowing students well leads to good teaching, better learning and a positive day-to-day community experience’. In order to achieve this, Bath Academy has enhanced their Personal Tutoring Programme this year to encompass the whole student, resulting in a more holistic and reflective approach that takes into account not only the student’s academic progress, but also supports their emotional and mental well-being.

“Personal attention is widely recognised as a powerful, yet deceptively simple educational force in an age where impersonalism and anonymity are common conditions of life for many. It bears directly on several tasks in contemporary education: reducing the isolation of young people from caring adults, increasing their incentives to engage in serious learning, and making education more responsive to the realities of individual differences,” says Principal Tim Naylor, who has a background in Psychology.

"Personal attention is widely recognised as a powerful, yet deceptively simple educational force in an age where impersonalism and anonymity are common conditions of life for many."

At Bath Academy, the Personal Tutor’s role focuses on pulling together disconnected information about an individual student from teachers, parents, boarding and pastoral staff, creating a comprehensive student profile to enable them to support the student in their overall educational experience and provide appropriate guidance.

Much current research has found that students believe that small environments, informality, and ‘being known’ by adults create more incentives to learn than the curriculum. Such personal attention builds bonds with an adult that motivates students to invest in the college because they care about that adult’s opinion of them.

This is where Bath Academy excels, and has certainly seen the most progress with students; targeted teaching in small classes combined with the personalised teaching and tutoring support has resulted in many students making huge improvements, whether it’s a seven-grade improvement across their A-Levels, or a special needs student with high anxiety attending a social event and making a new group of friends, there is no doubt that confidence in each student shines through in this environment.
