Afternoon Tea…where there’s tea there’s hope!

This summer the newly refurbished DoubleTree by Hilton Bath is introducing a series of afternoon teas in a unique space overlooking the River Avon and Pulteney Bridge called the Secret Garden.

A little piece of heaven, the Secret Garden is a secluded spot reminiscent of an orangerie during Georgian high society. With prices starting from £25.50 per person the Secret Garden is without doubt the perfect place in Bath to sip tea and watch the ducks go by!

Why Bath?

The UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath, renowned for its honey-coloured stone architecture, crescents and palladian bridges, is the perfect destination for a weekend break.

The Georgians were big tea drinkers and sipping afternoon tea was a popular past time as well as an art form (it was also a way to ‘advertise’ eligible women and project them onto the social scene of Bath).

The Georgians also saw the popularisation of many foods such as chocolate, ice cream, biscuits, cakes and jelly. Who knew party food was invented by the Georgians!

So, not surprisingly sipping tea in public is still as popular today as it was then especially in the historic city of Bath.

So, in true Georgian fashion the DoubleTree by Hilton Bath has not only reinvented itself (spending an extensive £10.1 million on a recent refurb) but has also pushed the Georgian punt out (if there is such as thing) and included all things sweet (and savoury) to its extensive hotel menu.

Traditional sweet afternoon tea

Choose from a selection of sweet treats such as green tea and pistachio macaroons, English custard tarts and lemon drizzle cake, accompanied by home baked scones with clotted cream and a further selection of hand cut sandwiches including Scottish smoked salmon, roast chicken breast and cucumber with dill. Washed down with a choice of speciality teas or coffees, or even a glass of fizz, and partakers will undoubtedly start feeling like Georgian royalty.

Pssst… don’t forget to turn up with an empty stomach because you will definitely leave feeling stuffed!

Savoury afternoon tea

Now, if you’re not a tea drinker, or you’re not into coffee, then have no fear the hotel has also introduced a new savoury afternoon tea complete with locally sourced ales and ciders that is sure to whet your appetite.

Specially designed for a more masculine clientel, the savoury afternoon tea is the perfect gift for a doting dad, cherished brother or spoilt partner.

Compliment your cider or ale with a selection of homemade savouries including Serano ham and chive quiche, cheddar choux buns, spinach and cheese croquettes plus a further selection of homemade cakes including goat’s cheese cheecake and mature cheddar and carrot flapjack.

As if that wasn’t enough, visitors will also receive a mini ploughman’s including mini pork pies and a selection of locally sourced pickles and chutneys.

Savoury afternoon tea will most certainly leave you stuffed to bursting!
