Escape the hustle and bustle of the city at three idyllic destination pubs

Published by .

The Inn at Freshford, the Cross Guns in Avoncliff and The Old Crown Inn in Kelston are three sister pubs, each set in idyllic locations with stunning rural surroundings.

Set in the heart of villages on the outskirts of Bath, they are true destination pubs, with people visiting us from far & wide; seeking out an escape from the city and a rural idyll.

Our pubs are popular with walkers and cyclists, dog walkers and families. Being located on the banks of the river, it is not unusual for people to arrive at the Cross Guns by boat, kayak or paddle board.

All of them have easy access to the countryside, canal & river walks and boast impressive backdrops. The Cross Guns is located on the river bank with the historic Avoncliff Aqueduct standing proud close by & a short walk from The Old Crown you will find Kelston’s Round Hill with its breath-taking views.

Each pub is linked by walks. The Cross Guns is a short walk across fields from The Inn at Freshford and from Avoncliff, the Old Crown Inn can be reached by walking/cycling along the tow path.

Being able to enjoy the outdoors is part of what we are about and we are lucky that each of the pubs has a welcoming outdoor space. We want people to come and enjoy our large, award winning gardens – providing a place for relaxation & where people can meet and enjoy fine food & drink ‘al fresco’.

Our menus change throughout the seasons, using the best ingredients which, where possible, we source from local suppliers – our vegetables are grown close by in Wiltshire and our cheese is from Bath Soft Cheese, our neighbour in Kelston!

We have a smoke house in the garden at The Inn at Freshford where we smoke meats, vegetables and cheese, to produce delicious smoked ingredients to be used throughout our menus.

There are outside bars at The Inn at Freshford and at The Old Crown. At the Cross Guns we have a Deli which is open daily from 9 to 5, serving barista coffees, teas, drinks, & fresh food – pies, salads, sandwiches, cakes and lots more – to grab & go or eat in the garden.

We love our outside spaces and we plan a packed calendar of events throughout the year that take place in the gardens.

Sunny days and balmy evenings create a compelling desire to eat al fresco. Often on a bank holiday weekend, we will have an impromptu BBQ or cook an enormous paella. However, eating & cooking outside doesn’t have to be limited to the summer months. We’re passionate about eating al fresco and cooking outside, throughout the seasons.

Our Al Fresco Dining Club evenings take place throughout the year, featuring bespoke seasonal menus cooked outside using a variety of open fire cooking methods – asado, braai and traditional British BBQ.

The Cross Guns has a feast on the first Sunday of every month – sumptuous meats & seasonal vegetables, slow cooked over flames & embers. These events are hosted by Barabiku Outdoor, our sister company ( Barabiku Outdoor provide outstanding open-air dining experiences that can be tailored to any event & venue. Experienced at hosting gourmet BBQs, they deliver bespoke & innovative hospitality to events, weddings, festivals and functions of all sizes. Skilled in event planning, they host exceptional outdoor parties.

All our gardens are available for private hire and are beautiful venues for events, parties and wedding receptions.

Whether it’s at a table in one of our gardens; sat by the river with a picnic from our Deli or at one of our outdoor events – our pubs have all the ingredients for al fresco eating.
